Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami (b. 1962) is a Japanese painter and sculptor known for his integration of Fine Art, commercialism, Japanese aesthetics, and cultural criticism into his work. He attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied traditional Japanese painting.  He later explored anime and cartoons and gained recognition as a sculptor in the early 1990s. His innovative “Superflat” aesthetic combined classical Japanese art with contemporary Japanese pop culture. His work continues to explore the links between traditional printmaking and Japanese styles of comic in his graphic, vividly colored works. He also founded Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., an artist management agency and studio, and collaborated with fashion label Louis Vuitton.
