Sandow Birk (b. 1962), born in Detroit, Michigan, is an American artist known for his monumental multi-media projects that address contemporary life. His works emphasize social issues and include themes of inner city violence, graffiti, political issues, travel, war, and prisons, as well as surfing and skateboarding. He is a graduate of the Otis Art Institute of Parson School of Design in Los Angeles. The artist often works across various media, including painting, drawings, printing, writing, film, video, and sculpture. His work is in many public and museum collections, including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Getty Center in Los Angeles, the New York Historical Society, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
