Roberto Matta

Roberto Matta (1911-2002) was a Chilean artist known for blending European Surrealism with American Abstract Expressionism. Born in Santiago, Childe, he studied architecture at the Catholic University of Santiago and later moved to Paris to work in Le Corbusier’s studio.  His work is characterized by fantastical illustrations that explore the unconscious by employing automatism and flowing perspective and vivid color. He settled in New York in 1938 and transitioned from drawings to oil painting, creating his Inscape series. During the 1950s and 1960s, he spent his time between South America and Europe.  His paintings combine politics with semi-Abstract Art, and he worked on large canvases.  Some of Matta's best-known work include The Road to Heaven and Polimorfologia.
