Robert Indiana (b. 1928) is an American Pop artist and “sign painter” known for his iconic images of numbers and letters, including his LOVE (1967) image. Born in New Castle, Indiana, he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and moved to New York in 1954. In the 1960s, he began to paint single words, often composed of three or four letters, beginning the body of work for which he is best known. In 2013, the Whitney Museum of American Art hosted the first retrospective of his work in New York. The artist currently lives and works in Vinalhaven, Maine.
