Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon (1923–2004) was an American fashion and fine art photographer known for is iconic portraits of celebrities, spanning over more than half of the 20th century.  His portraits are characterized by their intimate, lively expression, and his subjects include Marilyn Monroe, Ezra Pound, Dwight Eisenhower, Andy Warhol, and Tupac Shakur. Born in New York, New York, he studied at The New School and worked as a staff photographer at Vogue beginning in 1964. He is also known for his series portraying American Western figures such as drivers, miners, and cowboys. The photographer was the recipient of numerous awards including the National Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2003.
