Ralph Hurst

Ralph Hurst  (1918-2003) was an American painter, ceramist, designer, architect, and most notably, a sculptor. Born in Decatur, Indiana, he studied art at Indiana University and later became a member of the art faculty at Florida State University. He is best known for his alabaster carvings of figures and love birds. The artist worked with wood, marble, alabaster, bronze, steatite, ceramics, paint, and synthetics.  His work simplifies and abstracts his subjects and is also characterized by its repetition of lines and rhythmic carving.  He has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and had one-man exhibitions nationwide.
