Mies van der Rohe

Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was a German-born American Modernist architect and furniture designer known for his rectilinear forms crafted in simplicity. He was a key figure of the International Style and 20th century architecture and design. His work focused on structural honesty and functional design that reflected the 20th century industrial society. Early in his life, he apprenticed with Bruno Paul, a leading furniture designer who worked in the Art Nouveau style of the period.  The Barcelona chairs, designed for the German Pavilion in 1929, became an instant classic of 20th-century furniture design.
