Matthew Barney (b.1967), born in San Francisco, California, is an American contemporary artist whose work combines sculptural installations with performance art and video. After graduating from Yale in 1989, the artist began creating works focusing on the themes of athleticism, sexuality, and the human body that draw from his own experience as an athlete. He continued exploring these themes in his project The Cremaster Cycle (1994–2002), a series of five feature-length films characterized by Surrealist-inspired imagery. His works are held in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. The artist lives and works in New York, New York.
