Mark di Suvero (b. 1933) is an American Abstract Expressionist sculptor who creates monumental sculptural works from welded scrap metal. Born in Shanghai, he moved to San Francisco as a child and studied at the University of California. He later moved to New York City and welded his large outdoor works from steel and found materials, including tires and railroad ties. The artist developed works based on industrial structures, such as welded or bolted I-beams and heavy gauge metal. He also incorporated motion into his sculptures with swinging beams and rotating forms, permitting viewers and natural elements to interact with the piece. Currently, his sculptures are installed in public locations around the world.
