Maqbool Fida Husain (1915-2011), born in Pandharpur, was a prominent Indian artist whose work combined Western Modernism and Cubism with traditional Indian secular and religious subjects and motifs. He is also known for his more traditional Indian subjects, including his depictions of the Mahabharata and other Indian deities.  He was largely self-taught artist and began his career as a fine artist in the 1940s.  He was a member of the Progressive Artist’s Group and explored re-inventing conventional academic techniques.
