Larry Sultan

Larry Sultan (1946-2009) was an American photographer known for is conceptual photography. Born in Brooklyn New York, he grew up in Los Angeles and studied at UC Santa Barbara and the San Francisco Art Institute. His book Evidence (1977), made in collaboration with Mike Mandel, was composed of photographs from industrial and governmental archives and was a landmark in the history of conceptual photography.  His work is in collections at the Guggenheim Museum, The Tate Modern, The Stedelijk, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is also the recipient of five NEA grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Louis Tiffany Comfort Award, and a Fleishhacker Fellowship.
