Larry Rivers

Larry Rivers (1923-2002), born Yitzroch Loiza Grossberg in the Bronx, New York, was an American painter and sculptor whose work combined Abstract Expressionism with the commercial images of advertising. He is known for his figurative paintings, which combine a loose, formal style with iconic works from art history, commercial culture, and everyday life. He studied with Hans Hofmann in the late 1940s and created works depicting naturalistic subject matter with loose brushstrokes.  Beginning in the 1970s, he used airbrushing, stenciling, printmaking, and assemblage in his art and was an integral member of the Chelsea Hotel scene.  The artist had a major retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. in 2002.
