Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys (1921-1986)  was a German Conceptual and performance artist known for his original and controversial theoretical style.  His practice of “social sculpture” intended to blend the space of life and art. Born in Krefield, Germany, he attended Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1947. Beginning in 1963, he began to create Aktion, his sensationalist happenings, characterized by mysterious performances employing ritualistic props and live and dead animals. I Like America and America Likes Me (1974) remains a pioneering piece of performance art in which the artist locked himself in a room with a live coyote for three days. For the last 20 years of his life, the artist worked on public and political art.
