Joel Shapiro (b. 1941) is an American artist best known for his wood sculptures of abstracted human forms. He work is composed of painted rectangular blocks arranged in compositions that evoke representational forms in space. Born in Queens, New York he attended New York University and has regularly exhibiting at the Pace Gallery in New York.His early sculptures include small-scale works of furniture and homes, and his more recent works depict large-scale geometric shapes suggestive of human forms in bronze, wood, and other materials. His work is also in institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Tate Gallery in London.
