James Brown (b. 1951) born in Los Angeles,is an American painter, sculptor, experimental printmaker, and ceramicist known for his biomorphic and primitivist works that are mostly abstract while having traces of Modernist-influenced figuration. He studied at the Immaculate Heart College and later attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Many of his series reference literary and musical works. In 1995, he created a series of 80 abstract paintings based on Gustav Holt’s orchestral composition The Planets.The artist had solo exhibitions at numerous international galleries, including Galeria Hilario Galguera in Mexico City, Galerie Karsten Greve in Paris, France and Galerie Lelong in Paris.
