Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was an Italian draftsmen, printmaker, and architect known for his Neoclassical etchings, notably his series of work Views of Rome, begun in 1747.

Born in Mogliano Veneto, Italy, he later studied Latin, ancient Roman culture, architecture, and later etching at the Palazzo Venezia. These studies, along with his use of gravure techniques, provided his etches realistic depth and structural perspective.  His depictions of Rome garnered him commissions from members of the clergy and aristocracy and would influence later artists such as the Surrealists. His works are in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Louvre Museum in Paris, among others.
