Item Description:

English, late 19th century. Matched pair of Gothic Revival style walnut hall chairs or Wainscot chairs, each with paneled back centered with inset gothic medallion within quatrefoil blind fretwork frame, the down-scrolled arms with trefoil pierced spandrels over a box seat with removable crimson velvet cushion and raised on front blindfret quatrefoil baluster supports united to the backswept legs by paneled block and turned stretchers. Fragmented retailers label to underside of one chair "W. & A. Chapman, Ltd/20/26, North St., Taunton/Z 8924/Mrs. E. Saul". Approximate height 40.37", width 21" (arm to arm), seat depth 19.5", seat height 18". Note: W and A Chapman Ltd was founded in 1864 by William Muggleton Chapman and Arthur Allen Chapman. This developed into a department store, situated in North Street, Taunton, which sold furniture, drapery and household goods. Partnership was dissolved Feb 7 1898.
