Australia / Corroboree. .
For 40,000 years, Australian aboriginals have danced the Corroboree, a ritual gathering of dance, song and rhythm that invokes the Dreamtime, the sacred reality of the world. Adorning themselves with headdresses, white stripes of body paint, and banging out rhythms on boomerangs or rhythm sticks, it's a deep immersion into the archaic history of the world's oldest people. Gert Sellheim, a German immigrant to Australia after the First World War, found this a natural subject for the Australian Tourist Bureau, influenced as he was by Cubism in his youth. In opposition to his main rival in Australian travel posters, Percy Trompf, Sellheim eschewed descriptive portraits of Australia's landscape and instead tried to represent the character and sensation of the land, as this, one of his most famous posters, attests.
