Robert Phillips and his brother Magnus established their business as Phillips Brothers before 1839 in London, England, and continued for the rest of the century, describing themselves as "Classic goldsmiths, jewellers and coral merchants. Art Reproductions in the Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Runic, Byzantine, Medieval, and Oriental Styles". The company was noted for Renaissance revival designs, of which this memorial brooch is a classic example.
