Elizabeth Peyton (b. 1965) is contemporary American painter known for her intimate portraits of celebrities, friends, and historical figures. Her work is characterized by transparent washes of pigment and employees a jewel-tone palette.Born in Danbury, Connecticut, she studied at the School of Visual Arts and launched her career in 1993 with a solo show of drawings at theChelsea Hotel. She has painted notable figures, including Kurt Cobain, Barack Obama, and David Bowie. She has held major exhibitions at the New Museum in New York, the Royal Academy in London, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis, among others.
