Edo Murtic

Edo Murtic (1921-2005), born in Croatia, was a prominent European Abstraction artist known for his bold use of colors.  He was a painter, printmaker, and designer and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb and at the Zagreb Academy. In the late 1940s, he lived in New York, where he converted to Abstractism.  In the 1950s, he began to paint abstracted landscapes in a post-Cubist style with an interplay of shapes.  He later pioneered abstract tachiste painting in Yugoslavia with pictures composed of clouded patches of color and gestural calligraphic lines.  His works are in numerous public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
