Demetre Chiparus

Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) was a Romanian sculptor working in the Art Deco style and is known for his sculptures depicting female dancers in ancient Egyptian or contemporary ballet attire.  His work often employed the sculpting technique chryselephantine, combining bronze and ivory. Born in Dorohoi, Romania, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited at the Salon in 1914. His dancing figures are characterized by their slender, stylized appearance, and he also sculpted animal figures in the Art Deco style. His work is in the permanent collection of Casa Lis, an Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum in Salamanca, Spain.
