Clarence Kerr Chatterton

Clarence Kerr Chatterton (1880-1973) was an American painter known for his pioneering depictions of small town America. Born in Newburgh, New York, he later studied at the New York School of Art and became part of a group of young artists that were students of Robert Henri. His work depicted the beauty in the ordinary and emphasized color and the quality of light. In 1910, he exhibited  at the MacDowell Club in New York City and later had his first solo exhibition in 1925 at the Wildenstein Gallery.  In 1915, he became one of the first artists in residence in the United States at Vassar College, and retained that position for 33 years.
