'Flexibility in Subodh Gupta's [paintings] allows for poetic metaphor; the polarities of passive and aggressive, personal and impersonal, demand comparison but imply co-existence and this typifies the Indian way, even if at times things appear absurd or obsolete. Often absurdities carry practicalities... Practicalities dilute down the line to form cultural norms, intrinsic values, habits, traditions, rituals (and vice-versa) ...Gupta's attempt to reconcile himself with this duality forces him to confront existing norms and standards in a somewhat eclectic way. The work jumps backwards and forwards, collecting from the sacred and secular data that attracts him.'
