in the style of Fortuny, the seven individual conical, spiralling glass lights, each painted with panels of delicate ornamental patterns, with silk tassels and beads, hung with fine silk threads from a central seven-arm metal bracket

The cesendello, or sanctuary lamp, has its origins in the aesthetics of ancient Rome and Byzantium, and eventually spread to Venice and beyond. Its delicately spiralling form echoes the twist of an oriental turban, representing the very early synthesis of Oriental and Western themes all over Europe.
