Antoni Tàpies

Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and lithographer known for his mixed media practice incorporating found objects and natural materials.  He created textured and tactile artworks that incorporate social themes. Born in Barcelona, Spain, he became one of the founding members of the Dau al Set avant-garde coalition of writers and artists in 1948. He began his career working within Surrealist traditions, but became increasingly Abstract and aligned with the Art Informel movement in the 1950s.  His later works also used obscure materials such as marble dust and clay and experimented with many media and techniques.
