American School

The story of visual arts of the United States is profoundly intertwined with the history of the country and its peoples. From its beginnings, American artists took those themes on, from the great portraits of early settlers through majestic landscape paintings of the New World. No matter the medium, profound depictions were produced of American life as history swelled, buildings grew taller, and technologies brought new industries. In the 19th and 20th centuries, artists in the American School created portrait paintings, landscape paintings, still life paintings and sculptures.
